The final chapter of the 2026 Funny Car Chaos Championship Tour brought the series to historic Cordova Dragway on September 25-26th where the DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos series shared the stage for two days of outlaw drag racing action in an event presented by Twisted Shifterz and 360-Steel. This event, like many others on the 2026 CHAOS tour, fell victim to mother nature and was postponed one week as the original date was plagued with rain in Illinois.
Nineteen cars battled for their respective positions in the Rodak’s Custom Coffee ‘A’ Field and AlkyDigger ‘B’ Field during two rounds of qualifying on Friday night. Kirk Williams’ 3.68 at 205 mph blast secured his “200 Proof” team the top spot in the ‘A’ Field while Jesse Clark’s 4.15 would lead the ‘B’ Field into eliminations on Saturday.
In a season that just seemed to be plagued with obstacles, from mother nature to the price of diesel, the curve balls weren’t done being thrown yet. One hour before the first round was set to kick off on Saturday, the timing system computer failed. After two hours of repair attempts, track officials notified CHAOS staff that this was a terminal issue and racing would likely have to be stopped for the weekend, but NOT at the CHAOS!
The CHAOS staff held an immediate drivers meeting and announced the plan to flag start the eliminations in a truly chaotic decision. After determining the process to make this approach as fair as possible, details were being announced and racers were fired up for this unique decision which would go down in the history books as another CHAOS first. As the drivers meeting was nearing completion, Cordova Dragway staff rushed to the meeting to inform everyone the timing system had been suddenly repaired.
Despite the racers excitement for a flag start finish to the season, the race moved forward in traditional fashion and cars were immediately called to the lanes for first round of eliminations. The Rodak’s Custom Coffee ‘A’ Field was full of upsets and by sundown Lance Van Hauen and Wayne Hofmann were final round bound. Both drivers were on their game at the starting line with Hofmann taking a slight advantage. Van Hauen had closed the gap and was pulling ahead before having to give it a quick pedal job and that's all Hofmann needed to pull ahead. Hofmann's 4.09 at 172 took the win over Van Hauen's 4.22 at 176. Congratulations to the entire "China Syndrome" team on a big win to end the season.
The AlkyDigger ‘B’ Field welcomed Cody Chatfield and Justin Malott to the last dance of the year, both drivers proudly collecting every possible point they could to ensure a Top 5 finish in the season standings. Chatfield came out with a big burnout but then his engine fell silent, unexpectedly ending his hopes of a trophy in Cordova. Malott and company had the win in the bag and secured their third straight Funny Car Chaos event win to cap off a very impressive second half of the season for the “Must Be Nice” team.
Keith Zimmerer had already clinched the season Championship for team “Penny Pincher” coming into Cordova and was unable to attend the postponed event due to schedule conflicts, but the excitement in Cordova was top tier as drivers swapped points positions in their effort to lock down a Top 5 finish in the standings. With his three straight wins, Justin Malott finished number two with Jordan Ballew, Wayne Hofmann and Cody Chatfield rounding out the Top 5.
It was a trying year for the CHAOS, but with the support of our amazing racers, fans and marketing partners we can close the chapter on 2026 and look forward to celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Funny Car Chaos in 2027. Stay tuned for next year’s schedule and we’ll see you…at the CHAOS!
