Lawson Clinches 2024 FCC Championship! Van Hauen, Newkirk, Thomas and Cook Cash in at Mo-Kan Championship Finals
The Spell Paving Services Funny Car Chaos Championship Tour concluded its 2024 season at the Twisted Shifterz FCC Championship Finals at Mo-Kan Dragway on August 30-31st! A jam packed facility full of flopper hungry fans welcomed the stars of CHAOS for this epic season finale where the season Champion would be crowned at Mo-Kan for the first time. Coming into the weekend, five teams were in the hunt for the title and as the event unfolded the excitement and anticipation was overwhelming.
Friday night's qualifying sessions were rained out which shuffled a full day of ground pounding CHAOS action to Saturday. Two qualifiers were contested which also featured the Great 8 Shootout, which was eventually won by Shayne Lawson during the elimination rounds of the event. Some very interesting pairings were set as eliminations kicked off on Saturday evening under the watchful eyes of a capacity crowd. It came down to the results of the semi-final rounds of the 32 car main event before Shayne Lawson's "Man O' War II" team mathematically clinched the 2024 FCC Championship! Prior to that, Lawson had lined up during Q2 with Kirk Williams in the semi-final of the Great 8 Shootout, then was paired again with Williams for the opening round of eliminations. In both races, Williams lit the dreaded red bulb on the starting line and thus eliminated himself from a second FCC Championship.
Meanwhile, Lawson made his way through the rounds and to the Rodak's Custom Coffee 'A' Field final and was looking to sweep the weekend as the Great 8 Shootout winner, 2024 Championship winner and Mo-Kan event winner, but was upset on a holeshot by Lance Van Hauen. Van Hauen and company ended their season on a high note with a big win in Missouri. Mike Newkirk and team "Silver Slipper" took their first career CHAOS win in the AlkyDigger 'B' Field win over a red-lighting Ronny Young in the "Blue Max". Wulff Pumps 'C' Field action was led by another first time winner in Colin Thomas and the "Twisted Sister" team who edged out Shane Blanton's "Joker". The 'D' Field found Jade Cook and team "Nemesis" using her best elapsed time of the weekend to nose out Michael Neal in the "Burnin' Love" Nova.
What a suspensful weekend filled with all sorts of twists and turns as the teams in title contention battled for every precious point they could earn. Heading into the semi-finals it was still a four team thrash to the top of the standings but only one can hoist the trophy at the end of the season. Congratulations to Shayne Lawson, tuner Ken Singelton and the rest of the Oklahoma based "Man O' War II" team on a hard fought effort and impressive 2024 Funny Car Chaos Championship!
The Spell Paving Services Funny Car Chaos Championship Tour rolled into New Mexico's Albuquerque Dragway on July 26-27th to headline the track's 61st Anniversary celebration event! With just two events left in the 2024 season, this event would prove very important to the teams in the hunt for those precious points. Coming into the event, eight teams stood a fair shot at making a move to the top of the standings. 2022 Champion Kirk Williams wasted no time claiming points as he led the qualifying sheets after only two sessions were completed due to rain on Friday night.
Saturday welcomed pleasant weather and plenty of sunshine under the watchful eyes of a capacity crowd. Some fantastic racing was contested in the opening rounds of eliminations and in the Rodak's Custom Coffee 'A' Field hometown hero Lyle Greenberg met points hungry Shayne Lawson in the final. Greenberg had recently made track history as the first wheel driven car in the five second zone in the quarter mile and was looking to cap off what would have been a very memorable win, but troubles on the starting line caused the car to roll through the beams and he had the best seat in the house to watch Lawson's solid 3.88 at 195 mph winning pass. In the AlkyDigger 'B' Field, Brent Jones met Sheldon Lofgreen in the final round. Lofgreen suffered similar issues on the line as his twin turbocharged flopper bumped through the beams and Jones clicked off a 4.37 at 162 mph to take a memorable win for the team. The Wulff Pumps 'C' Field found Wayne Hofmann in a battle against first time round winner and finalist Michael Neal in a Connecticut versus Mississippi match up. Neal took a big starting line advantage but ran out of ponies as Hofmann's 4.47 at 161 mph took the win.
The points standings got a big shake up at Albuquerque and the teams in the hunt for the title will have to bring their best performances to the table at the Twisted Shifterz Funny Car Chaos Championship Finals at Mo-Kan Dragway on August 30-31st!
Hirata, Schneider, Cook and Herbst Hoist Cordova Trophies!
After a series of weather delays in the Funny Car Chaos season schedule, racing finally resumed at the historic and always exciting Cordova Dragway as the stars of CHAOS headlined the 2024 Summer Nationals presented by Twisted Shifterz & 360 Steel. With a mighty strong field of thirty seven outlaw funny cars on the property the competition was stiff and the entertainment was non-stop for the capacity crowd eager for ground pounding funny car action in an event that qualified a thirty two car main event.
Dave Hirata wowed the crowd with an impressive top qualifying effort and then marched through the Rodak's Custom Coffee 'A' Field for the win in Tom Motry's "Drastic Plastic" entry. Chris Schneider wheeled John Troxel's crowd favorite "Brutus" to the AlkyDigger 'B' Field victory which keeps them well in the hunt in the current points standings with two events remaining. Jade Cook's "Nemesis" team claimed the Wulff Pumps 'C' Field victory and Justin Herbst and team "Scorpion" hoisted the trophy in the Stanke Motorsports, Ronnie's Hot Rod Shop, Cordova Dragway and Chaos Super Fan funded 'D' Field. It was a quick turn around for the teams of Funny Car Chaos as the pits filled with floppers on April 19-20th for the CHAOS Cajun Nationals presented by Laris Motorsports Insurance at Baton Rouge's State Capitol Raceway. Kirk Williams wheeled the "200 Proof" entry to the final round of the Rodak's Custom Coffee 'A' Field and got the win over runner up Shayne Lawson. In the AlkyDigger 'B' Field, Chris Schneider put the "Brutus" entry in the winners circle over runner up Wayne Hofmann. Click the link for complete event results!

Laris Motorsports Insurance Continues Their Support of CHAOS in 2024
The Funny Car Chaos series is proud to extend our marketing partnership with Laris Motorsports Insurance who will be involved in the series through numerous avenues in the 2024 FCC Championship season. Laris Motorsports Insurance has renewed their status as ‘Official Insurance Provider’ of the series, has claimed title naming rights of the Laris Motorsports Insurance CHAOS Cajun Nationals, April 19th-20th at State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is a new FCC YouTube channel partner.
The Laris Insurance Agency is a fourth generation South Louisiana multiline insurance agency. For the last 30 years the Laris family has spent much of their spare time doing and thinking about one thing . . . . racing! Naturally, the Laris family tried to take their success helping energy clients on the Gulf Coast with their insurance needs and assist racers in finding coverage packages that didn't leave their assets exposed. The Laris family quickly realized that consistent coverage was going to be a challenging thing to find.
After carefully researching their options it was determined the best way to address the unique needs of fellow drag racers would be to write specialized coverages and offer superior service, particularly in the management of claims. Laris Motorsports Insurance offers broad package policies that don't leave gaps with on and off-track coverage. The Laris philosophy is simple, always put yourself in the shoes of someone who just saw their investment lost. Insurance is more than a piece of paper and a promise; it's a lifetime of relationships, and dedication to fair treatment.
Laris packs a powerful protection punch both on and off the track for your race cars including shops, tools, motorhomes and more. Laris Motorsports Insurance is fully prepared to professionally protect your racing assets. Driven Racing Oils Named Official Oil & Lubricant of CHAOS
The Funny Car Chaos and Nitro Chaos Championship drag racing series are thrilled to announce a new marketing partnership with Driven Racing Oils, the new “Official Oil & Lubricant” of CHAOS! Based in Tennessee and serving the entire United States and even Australia, Driven Racing Oils is paving a new road to protecting your performance engine, diesel application, hot rods and more.
Competition drives innovation. The Driven Racing Oil brand was originally created to advance engine and driveline lubricant performance in professional racing engines, but today our innovations as an engine oil shop extend beyond the racetrack to the street and more. But what makes our products different? All our products provide unique formulas developed with the application in mind first. Because we always put the “motor ahead of the molecule”, Driven keeps things in the proper order. Motor oil is for the motor, not the other way around. Our product development team looks at the engine and how it is used; then we design application specific products using a “zero compromise” approach that delivers a measurable performance advantage. Browse our products today to see for yourself what sets us apart from other racing oil companies.
“We are very excited to welcome Driven Racing Oils to the CHAOS nation and look forward to the benefits their top qualify products will bring to our racers, but their protection goes far beyond performance engines as well. Be sure to stop by the Driven display at each of our CHAOS events in 2024 to find out more about their impressive product line and why you, should be Driven!” says CHAOS series owner, Chris Graves.
Stop by the Driven Racing Oils booth at the track, learn more online now at www.drivenracingoils.com or email tech@drivenracingoil.com or call 866-611-1820 to speak to a representative who can assist you in professional protection with great customer service. 2024 Funny Car Chaos Schedule Released!
The 2024 season of Funny Car Chaos competition will mark the eighth consecutive year of this wildly popular heads up, run whatcha’ brung funny car series. With seven points races and two exhibition events on the tour, next year looks to be filled with lots of opportunities to catch some flopper action at a track near you. The Chaos formula is simple and it works, as fans can expect on average 30 funny cars of all kinds per show and guaranteed two days of grassroots family fun at the drags like you can find nowhere else. All the cars have names, all the teams and drivers are fully accessible in the pits and the Funny Car Chaos series will charge into 2024 riding a steam train of momentum as one of the hottest drag racing series in the country.
As always, the Spell Paving Services FCC season will kick off with the biggest funny car event in the world, the one and only Funny Car Chaos Classic at the historic Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas. This unrivaled event is set for April 4-6th and will see 50+ funny cars from coast to coast and will qualify a 32 car feature show. Also on tap at the Classic is the new addition of the DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos series that will run in conjunction with Funny Car Chaos. That along with hundreds of other racecars including Dirty South Gassers and more will deliver non-stop action on the strip in what will be one of the biggest events of the year in the Southwest. Cap this epic weekend of drag racing off with additional special festivities on Sunday and Monday, April 7-8th hosted by the Texas Motorplex in celebration of the total solar eclipse, more information coming soon.
The Chaos racing continues just two weeks later as the series returns for a third annual visit to State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the Laris Motorsports Insurance CHAOS Cajun Nationals April 19-20th. Cinco de Mayo weekend marks the return to West Texas and Penwell Knights Raceway in Odessa on May 3-4th, then its time to head to the Midwest. Eddyville Raceway Park is the next stop where again the Funny Car Chaos and Nitro Chaos series will run together at the same event, the 2nd Annual Twisted Shifterz CHAOS in the Cornfield on May 24-26th. If you were there this year, you know the deal, if you missed it, don’t miss it again!
The Twisted Shifterz and 360 Steel Summer Nationals at Cordova Dragway marks the next event on tour, Father’s Day weekend, June 14-15th. On Saturday, July 20th the Funny Car Chaos Summer Showdown will take place at Nebraska’s Kearney Raceway Park. This will be an exhibition, invitational, Chicago-style match race show. The next weekend, July 27-28th the FCC series returns to New Mexico’s Albuquerque Dragway and by now the points chase should be plenty hot with only one points event remaining. East Coast flopper fans can look forward to the return of CHAOS to Maryland International Raceway on August 23-24th for a non-points exhibition event showcasing dozens of East Coast funny car teams and more. The next weekend, the Funny Car Chaos Championship Finals will be held on August 30-31st at Mo-Kan Dragway just outside Joplin, Missouri where the 2024 FCC Champion will be crowned.
The 2023 season welcomed FCC’s 200th different participant. Who knew there were 200 running funny cars? Quite a wild stat. Another milestone for the series is coming up as Funny Car Chaos event number 50 will be next year at Penwell Knights Raceway in Odessa, Texas. Tom Furches will start the year off with a target on his back as the defending series Champion. Furches and the Colorado based “Made In America” team will have their hands full in their hopes of a title defense as the competition in the FCC series continues to impress. Fellow top five finishers in 2023 include 2022 Champion Kirk Williams, Shayne Lawson, Alex Barker and Jordan Ballew and they will all be ones to keep an eye on in 2024.
The unique Chaos formula of run whatcha’ brung racing, which then gets qualified into three eight car fields of equal points earning opportunity, has proven itself yet again as Furches typically competes in the AlkyDigger ‘B’ Field, while Williams and Lawson run in the Rodak’s Coffee ‘A’ Field and Barker and Ballew do their damage in the Wulff Pumps ‘C’ Field. Each event has three winners, each field earns equal points and the fun meter stays pegged and that’s what drag racing is all about.
The Funny Car Chaos series would like to thank Spell Paving Services, Performance Motorcoaches RV & Marine, Excel Drywall Racing, Wulff Pumps, Laris Motorsports Insurance, Maxima Racing Oil, Fat Tirez Apparel, AlkyDigger, Rodak’s Custom Coffee, Taylor Motorsports Products, Victory Driveline Components, CP-Carrillo, DMP Awnings, Twisted Shifterz, 360 Steel, S&W Racecars, Meyer Enterprises, High Performance Data LLC, Performax Trailers, Precision Reprographics, American Outlaw Energy, The Middendorf Companies, Stanke Motorsports, Pro Things Apparel, North Texas Diesel, Ellis County Custom Carts, Best of Texas BBQ Sauce, Wizard’s Warehouse, Red Line Shirt Club, Car Chix and Lone Star Forklift for their support of the 2023 racing season.
Furches Clinches Championship in Baton Rouge!
The highly anticipated Funny Car Chaos Championship Finals presented by Laris Motorsports Insurance was held September 15-16th at State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge. Entering the event, the battle for the Spell Paving Services Championship was between defending Champion Kirk Williams and Tom Furches. Twenty five cars were on the property in Baton Rouge and in the 'A' Field semi-finals Kirk Williams went red against top qualifier Keith Zimmerer. This opened the door for Furches, who was sitting in the waterbox watching this all unfold. Furches got the win light over Jade Cook in the 'B' Field semis and that round clinched the title for the "Made In America" team.
Furches went on to win the 'B' Field while Shayne Lawson took home top honors in the 'A' Field and Chuck Loftin tallied the win in the 'C' Field. See complete race results and photo highlights by clicking the link below...
Mo-Kan Dragway always delivers a very enthusiastic crowd and that good ol' time feeling at the drag races. Our highly anticipated trip to Asbury, Missouri just outside Joplin brought over 30 funny cars through the gates to headline the 58th Annual Labor Day Classic. It was a big swing for the points chasers of the CHAOS and at the end of eliminations Kirk Williams, Chris Schneider and Shane Blanton took home big wins in their classes! See complete results and photo highlights by clicking the link below...
The rain delayed elimination rounds of the Kearney, Nebraska event were finally made up during qualifying at Mo-Kan Dragway. This marked the first time an event had to be completely run at a later event, due to weather. With that, a few teams were unable to make the return to Mo-Kan to compete in the Kearney event, but after the rounds were settled in some action packed racing at Mo-Kan during qualifying, Jeff Cameron, Tom Butherus and Mike Buchanan claimed victories in their respective classes. The CHAOS Rocks Albuquerque Dragway's 60th Anniversary
The 60th Anniversary of Albuquerque Dragway was held July 28-29th and attracted nearly 30 funny car teams from literally coast to coast to New Mexico's premier drag racing facility. Although sixty years old, Albuquerque had what it needed to provide a fast track which broke numerous records including the highly anticipated first ever wheel driven three second eighth mile run, secured by defending CHAOS Champion Kirk Williams. Oh, that came with a $6,000 bonus as well!
Moving into eliminations, enthusiastic fans rooted their favorite flopper on as rounds dwindled down to the finals and that is where Keith Zimmerer scored his first ever CHAOS win while setting a track record with a 3.83 elapsed time! Ray Stringer continued his winning ways in the "Blown Centless" nitro burner and Justin Herbst tallied an impressive win as well. We have reached the halfway point of both the Spell Paving Services Funny Car Chaos and DMP Awnings Nitro Chaos Championship series. In both, the points battles are shaping up to be nail biters and each qualifying session and elimination round now become so very important to the many teams chasing those precious points. Not only are teams in a quest for the glory of a Championship, but they are also hunting their take of over $30,000 in year end points payouts across the Top 10 finishers of Funny Car Chaos and Top 5 finishers of Nitro Chaos.
Looking deeper into the Funny Car Chaos side, four races have been completed on the eight race points schedule. Young gun funny car pilot Alex Barker had led the standings through most of the first half of the season in his Oklahoma based “Back In Black” GTO bodied alcohol burner, until the most recent event at Cordova Dragway. A first round loss put Barker on the trailer early, while 2022 FCC Championship runner-up Tom Furches wheeled his Colorado based “Made In America” Firebird to the winners circle and assumed the points lead in the current standings.
“Leading the Funny Car Chaos points at the half-way point of the season is a reminder of the goals that were set for the 2023 season. Finishing second in 2022 was good, but we know we have a car capable of winning a championship. Drag racing at Funny Car Chaos exemplifies the three "C's" that are the backbone of the sport: camaraderie, competition and competitiveness between teams. In 2022, the “Made In America” team was built around youth and enthusiasm. For 2023, its more old age and treachery, and it's working!” says Furches.
Furches isn’t sitting comfortably at the top, as a mere seven points separate him from second place Barker and twenty-two points back sits defending series Champion Kirk Williams. Just seventy-six points separate all of the Top 10 heading into the next stop on tour at Nebraska’s Kearney Raceway Park. One mistake or mechanical failure can play a big role in how these drivers shuffle in the standings. Included in the top five is the “Dry Hop King” himself, Jordan Ballew. Ballew hails from Oklahoma and handles the driving duties for the family owned “Ballew Thunder” which has become a crowd favorite and is the only funny car in the entire world that has competed in all forty-two Funny Car Chaos events.
“So far our season has been pretty good. We have set career best numbers numerous times with great tuning from my dad. We didn't think we would be here with how stout the competition is, but it is proof the Chaos formula works and we are going to do our best to stay in contention. This series means everything to me and my family. I was just a kid with a dream of racing a funny car one day and the Chaos has not only let me live out that dream, but make tons of new friends and travel the country doing it. We can't thank Chris and Tera enough for giving us a place to race and for all the sponsors that support our team and the series,” said Ballew.
Its going to be an exciting second half of the season for the Funny Car Chaos competitors as they head to Kearney Raceway Park on July 7-8th, Albuquerque Dragway on July 28-29th, Mo-Kan Dragway on September 1-2nd and conclude at the new location for the FCC Championship Finals, State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on September 15-16th. The Funny Car Chaos series would like to thank Spell Paving Services, Wulff Pumps, Performance Motorcoaches, Excel Drywall and Fat Tirez Apparel for their support, which guarantees a $37,500 payout at each event and $20,000 year end payout the Top 10 finishers. Seventy six teams have competed in Funny Car Chaos this season. Upon completion of this, the seventh season of Funny Car Chaos, over two hundred funny car teams are expected to have participated in the red hot series.
